Jim Jannotti replied - Plussed this though I didn't really like the article. She seems entirely too self absorbed... it's no wonder she can't find a decent guy. I'm wondering what you found depressing (and yes, a little humor would have helped the writing immensely, and a sense of humor might bring some light into the poor girl's life as well)?6 months, 1 week ago
Nathan Rein - Well, I think it's hard to have a sense of humor about being lonely and disappointed when you're twenty. I find it depressing on a number of levels -- first, I think the writer is genuinely suffering, though you're right that she plays up some of the less sympathetic aspects of the persona in this piece. Second, and maybe more important, I think this piece suggests a sense of surrender, or failure, on a more general, broader, cultural level. This person is (or thinks she is) profoundly alone in a way that I think is true for lots of people, and not just college kids either, and her response is basically a mixture of cynicism, retrogression, and desperation, as far as I can tell. It doesn't bode well for the idea of experiencing real joy. 6 months, 1 week ago
Nathan Rein - Seems to me you replied to my reply, but now your reply seems to have vanished ... 6 months ago
